Deputy Prime Minister Cordel Hyde denounces US blockade on Cuba at G77+China Summit in Havana

Posted: Sunday, September 17, 2023. 8:56 am CST.

By Horace Palacio: Belize’s Deputy Prime Minister, Cordel Hyde, declared on Friday that the ongoing economic, commercial, and financial blockade by the United States against Cuba is not just an affront to the island nation but to all global citizens.

In his statement during the G77+China Summit held at the Havana International Conference Center (HICC), Hyde recognized the benevolent efforts of Cuba on the international stage. Highlighting the nation’s medical, educational, sports, cultural, and technological aid to various countries, he emphasized that Cuba holds a cherished place in the hearts of many across the globe.

He said, “What Cuba does is to send doctors, nurses, scholarships, sports, culture, and technology to its brothers and sisters in other countries.” The sentiment was echoed by many attendees who view Cuba as a beacon of assistance in critical areas, especially to the developing nations.

Drawing attention to the blockade that has persisted for over six decades, Hyde implored that it must come to an end. He emphasized that the duty falls upon developing nations to actively rally against such actions, stating that they should “work hard for that to happen.”

Further, in his address at the Summit, Hyde touched upon the detrimental effects of such blockades, labeling them as “immoral and coercive.” He explained how these are significant hindrances to progress, with the potential to greatly affect the vision of a more balanced world.

Delving into broader challenges that the global south encounters, such as the digital divide and the pervasive issue of brain drain, Hyde called upon nations to harness their collective creativity and drive. He urged them to unite and “do what others will not do for us.”

Reflecting on history, Hyde remembered the tumultuous past faced by many G77+China members. He recounted the harrowing tales of centuries plagued by the blight of slavery and colonialism, drawing parallels to modern struggles.

The G77+China Summit, known for being a platform that addresses global concerns and promotes cooperation, saw the participation of numerous nations who came together with a shared goal of fostering mutual growth and facing shared challenges.
