By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, the Belize Audubon Society (BAS) and the Belize Defense Force (BDF) formally signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) outlining their cooperative efforts to conduct patrols within the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary.
The Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, spanning 127,000 acres and including the Victoria Peak Natural Monument, is characterized by ridge crests, hills, and river flood plains, all adorned with tropical broadleaf evergreen forests. Initially established for its high concentration of jaguars, the sanctuary’s importance transcends the protection of this species.
One of its crucial roles is providing watershed protection and ensuring water security for the communities and agricultural areas downstream on the coastal plain. By safeguarding jaguars, the sanctuary also preserves plant and animal species that share these ecosystems.
The Cockscomb Basin embodies a unique wilderness experience to visitors, with abundant wildlife, well maintained trails, waterfalls, and overnight facilities.
This niche market for Belize’s tourism industry, attracts both local and international visitors and acting as an educational hub for schools to raise awareness about conservation and the importance of protected areas.
The MoU between the BAS and the BDF provides for enhanced conservation efforts, protection of vital resources and will advance eco-tourism in Belize.
The signing of the MoU between the Belize Audubon Society and the Belize Defense Force exemplifies the vital role of multi-sectoral collaboration in achieving the country’s conservation and sustainable development goals.
