International News: Taiwan urges China to cease ‘destructive’ military activities

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, Taiwan’s Defence Ministry issued a statement urging China to stop “destructive, unilateral action.”

Taiwanese officials have noted an increase in Chinese military activities near Taiwan.

Taiwan’s Defence Ministry said that it had detected 103 Chinese military aircraft over the sea.

In addition, it detected fighter jets crossing the Taiwan Strait.

Taiwan’s Defence Ministry said that Peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait are the common responsibilities of all parties in the region.

“The continuous military harassment by the Communist military can easily lead to a sharp increase in tensions and worsen regional security,” the ministry said.

According to Reuters, last week, China also dispatched more than 100 naval ships for exercises in the region.

For years, China has conducted military drills near Taiwan as it seeks to assert its sovereignty claims and pressure Taipei. China views Taiwan as its territory and has long vowed to “reunify” the self-governing democratic island.
