Prime Minister participates in High-Level Ocean Meeting at 2023 SDG Summit

By Celeste Chang: Prime Minister John Briceño engaged in a ‘High-Level Ocean Meeting’ and Leaders’ Dialogue at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City as he is apart of the 2023 SDG Summit. The ‘High-Level Ocean Meeting’ was hosted by the United Nations Global Compact Ocean Stewardship Coalition.

The purpose of the session is to bring government representatives, heads of UN agencies, academia, and the private sector together to reinforce the cooperation between these bodies, who work to solve problems with ocean-related industries.

The Prime Minister Briceño made his remarks at the event among Walter H. Roban, Deputy Premier of Bermuda; Sarah El Haïry, French Secretary of State for Biodiversity; and John Kerry, United States Special Presidential Envoy for Climate.

The session also had panel discussions on how key ocean industries can add eco-friendly global economic growth and wealth while fighting global warming and protecting marine ecosystems and biodiversity.

In his comment, he stated, “A People-Centric Agenda for Financing Ocean Conservation. The core of our conservation commitment is to deliver outcomes that benefit the Belizean people and planet through building a nature-positive economy.” He highlighted that “The ocean is central to Belize’s future. It feeds our people, it creates jobs, it protects our infrastructure, and it brings visitors to our beautiful country.”

His remarks also highlighted Belize’s efforts in protecting the ocean with initiatives including the Blue Bond and the Resilient Bold Belize, another innovative conservation finance model being championed by the Government of Belize.

The 2023 SDG Summit has marked the halfway point deadline to achieving the 2030 plan and the Goals for sustainable development.
