Prime Minister reiterates Belize’s commitment at United Nations Sustainable Development Goals Summit

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: World leaders are gathered at the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Summit in New York.

The SDG Summit aims to adopt a forward-looking political declaration reaffirming commitment to the central, transformative promise of the 2030 Agenda to leave no one behind.

Prime Minister John Briceño addressed the summit today reiterating Belize’s commitment to the SDGs.

“As I addressed my global peers today at the Sustainable Development Goals Summit, I highlighted the troubling slow progress of implementation, complicated by ongoing world crises and systemic inadequacies.

Belize remains committed to the SDGs and our ambitious, #PlanBelize Medium Term Development Strategy and our overall goal of inclusive equitable and sustainable development is key to realize real change across critical sectors like health, education, natural resources use and management access to services and opportunities,” the Prime Minister noted.

The United Nations is alarmed since only about 15 percent of SDG targets are on track.

Heads of State and Government attending the Summit are expected to adopt a political declaration with a clear path forward.
