By Aaron Humes: If you haven’t been hearing much about crime lately, you can credit the resolve of the Belize Police Department to make the celebratory month of September as crime-free as possible.
However, there was a shooting incident on Sunday night at about 9 p.m. on Custard Apple Street, Belama Phase II, Belize City, that left Jaheem Lawrence with gunshot injuries.
According to police, Lawrence was inside his house when a man came and fired several shots towards the house, causing his injuries. He is at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital in a stable condition.
Police believe a prior confrontation between Lawrence and others led to the shooting. They are seeking two suspects in regard to this shooting.
ACP Hilberto Romero, Officer Commanding Eastern Division, commented in terms of the recent lull in crime and police’s crime-fighting efforts: “…we have several operations that are ongoing. We have checkpoints, we have additional patrols and we have additional patrols for the flag-raising ceremony, as well as the Twenty-first [Uniform Parade]. And yes, our police officers are out there and they are trying to prevent these major incidents from occurring.”
