By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Minister of Health and Wellness, Kevin Bernard addressed the United Nations General Assembly and reiterated Belize’s commitment to global solidarity and cooperation in pandemic prevention, preparedness, and response.
“I am honored to address this esteemed gathering on behalf of Belize, a nation deeply committed to the promotion of global health and well-being. Today, we come together under the important theme of “Creating and Maintaining Political Momentum and Solidarity for Pandemic Prevention, Preparedness, and Response.” In light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the lessons learned, Belize underscores the urgent need for collective action, political will, and international solidarity to build a resilient global framework for pandemic prevention, preparedness, and response,” Bernard stated.
The Minister of Health indicated that the COVID-19 pandemic has exposed the vulnerabilities in our health systems, economies, and social fabric.
“It is crucial that we learn from this experience and take concrete steps to prevent and mitigate future pandemics. Belize emphasizes the need for political commitment at the highest level to ensure sustained momentum in pandemic preparedness and response efforts,” Bernard added.
Bernard said that countries must strengthen their global governance mechanisms to enhance coordination, transparency, and accountability.
Belize further called for the reform and empowerment of international health institutions to enable them to effectively respond to future health crises.
“We must invest in robust surveillance systems, early warning mechanisms, and data sharing platforms to facilitate rapid detection and response to emerging infectious diseases,” Bernard reiterated.
The Minister of Health and Wellness also emphasized the need to ensure equitable access to affordable and quality healthcare.
