By Horace Palacio: In a momentous decision that bodes well for citrus growers across Belize, a joint meeting was convened among the Citrus Growers Association (CGA), Belize Citrus Mutual (BCM), and Citrus Products of Belize Limited (CPBL) on September 19th, 2023. The collective groups came together to set and agree upon prices for the forthcoming 2023/2024 processing season.
The agreement reached ensures that citrus growers will receive BZS 18.00 per box for both grapefruits and oranges. These prices are based on 5.7-pound solids per box for oranges and 4.0-pound solids per box for grapefruits. In an added incentive for the growers, for every additional 50,000 boxes in excess of the 750,000 boxes delivered to CPBL, the fruit prices will see an increment of BZ$0.25 per box.
This landmark decision marks a historic high in the prices for oranges. Such a remarkable achievement has been credited to the assistance and support provided by the Government of Belize to the citrus growers.
In a joint press release issued by the three major entities, gratitude was expressed towards the Government of Belize. The statement read, “The parties thank the Government of Belize for its assistance in making these historic fruit prices possible.”
This new pricing structure underscores the commitment of the government to support its citrus industry, benefitting not just the growers but also solidifying Belize’s reputation as a prominent citrus producer on the global stage.
