International News: President of Paraguay calls for Taiwan to return to UN

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez:  President of Paraguay, Santiago Pena called for Taiwan to return to the United Nations.

Pena urged for Taiwan’s readmission to the United Nations in recognition of its democratic credentials.

According to the Associated French Press, President Pena said the U.N. should reflect “participatory, democratic and equitable practices” in line with the United Nations Charter.

“In this light, Paraguay expresses its support for the Republic of China — Taiwan — to be an integral part of the United Nations,” Pena said.

Pena’s remarks come as China has escalated military activities near Taiwan.

China views Taiwan as part of its territory awaiting reunification, by force if necessary.
