By Zoila Palma Gonzalez:  Data from the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB) indicate that the prices of meat, milk and egg have increased by more than 10% when compared to last year.

The prices of whole chicken went from $3.03 per pound in 2022 to $3.21 per pound in July of this year and the price of chicken cuts went from $3.37 to $3.72.

The price of egg went from 36 cents for 1 to 40 cents for one and the price of milk increased from $3.15 to $3.91 per litre.

The SIB noted that overall, the ‘Food’ sub-category alone recorded an inflation rate of 13.8 percent for the month.

In addition, prices for cereal products, such as rice, flour, bread, and tortillas registered a 12.5% increase.

Vegetables and fruits were hiked by about 20% and the price of cooking oils saw a 16% increase.

Consumer prices, which began to increase sharply in the months following the start of the pandemic, have seen a gradual slowdown in the rate at which they have been rising since the beginning 2023.
