By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB) has released data on inflation and consumer prices for the month of July 2023.
Among the municipalities, Punta Gorda Town recorded the highest rate of increase in consumer prices for the month of July 2023, with an inflation rate of 5.2 percent.
Residents of Punta Gorda saw above average increases in the cost of various food items, restaurant services, clothing, laundry products, soaps, home rental costs, rental costs for chairs, tables, and event venues, and personal hygiene products.
Following closely behind is San Pedro Town registering a 5.1% inflation rate.
On the contrary, Corozal Town had the lowest inflation rate of 1.1 percent for the month, with consumers in this town experiencing lower than average increases in prices for food items, restaurant services, medicine products, laundry products, soaps, detergents, domestic services, and personal hygiene products.
Other municipalities such as Belmopan registered a 3.2% inflation rate, San Ignacio and Santa Elena with 2.6 % inflation rate, Benque Viejo del Carmen experienced a 1.9 % inflation rate, Orange Walk recorded 1.4%, Belize City recorded 2.6%, Dangriga recorded 3.8 % and Independence 4.6% inflation rates.
As consumer prices rise, Belizeans are advised to limit social dinners, opt for home-cooked meals, and embrace backyard gardening.
