By Breaking Belize News Staff: Lorenzo Alfonso Smith Jr., a convicted murderer who was recently released from prison in May, finds himself once again in trouble with the law. Smith Jr. is accused of executing a daring robbery at La Popular Bakery on Cemetery Road, Belize City.

Smith Jr., from Crooked Tree Village, appeared in Court on Wednesday morning to answer to a single charge of robbery. The charge is in relation to an armed robbery which occurred on Saturday, September 16, 2023. Smith Jr., was allegedly armed with a firearm when he stormed into La Popular Bakery and forced the cashier to hand over $850.00 in cash.

During his court appearance, Smith Jr. pleaded not guilty. Given the grave nature of the alleged crime, Smith Jr. was denied bail. He will remain in custody at the Belize Central Prison until his next court appearance scheduled for November 22, 2023.

The accused was previously convicted of a fellow inmate Alfonzo Eck on October 9, 2009. Eck, who was serving time for an attempted robbery, was discovered lifeless in his cell. Dr. Mario Estradabran who testified in Smith’s Jr.’s trial said that Eck died from manual strangulation and that he did not commit suicide. He also said in his testimony that Eck had an injury to his head caused by a sharp instrument. After initially deemed a suicide, Dr. Estradabran testimony turned the spotlight onto Smith, leading to his conviction and sentencing.

Smith Jr. served his time and was released from prison in May, 2023.
