By Aaron Humes: Opening this morning’s Independence Day ceremonies in Belmopan, Mayor Sharon Palacio said there is still work to do to remove strictures of colonialism despite our political Independence.
She insisted that we must “indigenize” knowledge – learning from each other and from those who have much to teach but no outlet for doing so. She called on women to work with men to advance political participation – “we need two wings to fly.”
Reporting on activities in the Garden City, the former educator said she was proud of obtaining 120 scholarships for students, building a first of its kind food bank and keeping the city accountable – without the benefit of the regular subvention from Central Government.
She also called out her own Council for foot-dragging on opportunities to develop the City, saying that she has had to step around landmines to be successful but reiterated that she was prepared to “deliver the City of Belmopan if given the chance.”
