By Breaking Belize News Staff: 31-year-old construction worker Kenroy Allen Gomez of Balan Street, Belize City, was sentenced to six (6) months in prison after being found guilty of stealing a bucket of electrical wires and attempting to escape from police custody not once, but twice.
The electrical wires, that Gomez was accused of stealing is valued at $80 and belonged to businessman Darrell Usher Jr.
Gomez appeared in court unrepresented and entered a plea of guilty as he tried to justify his actions. He claimed that while he was employed by Usher, he was instructed to transport the bucket of electrical wires to another property. According to Gomez, this was when the police intercepted and questioned him. He claims that despite trying to explain his situation and his association with Usher, the police still arrested him.
However, Gomez’s story took a different turn when he tried to flee from police not once, but twice. He was captured shortly after his initial escape but later, while detained at the Queen Street Police Station, Gomez made another attempt to escape, running through the back door. He was caught again and charged for the offenses.
In court, Gomez expressed remorse for his actions and begged for leniency, emphasizing his role as the sole provider for his ailing mother, who is battling cancer.
The presiding Magistrate decided that Gomez would serve six months for each of his two charges. These sentences are to run concurrently, meaning Gomez will serve a total of six months in jail.
Friday’s court decision marks Gomez’s second conviction for theft in the courts of Belize.
