By Horace Palacio: New information has been released about the tragic vehicular accident that occurred on September 6 in Spanish Lookout, Cayo. The devastating incident involved 16 members of a family from Upper Bucks, a region in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, USA. Among the injured were Nathanael and Spring Davis, natives of Sellersville, a small town also located in Bucks County.
The family spent the day engaged in various outdoor activities in Belize, planning to cap off the day with one last dinner together. Most were set to return to the U.S. the next day, except for Nathanael and Spring Davis and their four children who were to stay behind to continue their missionary work. Nathanael Davis, driving the family van, described the accident as a “perfect storm” of unfortunate events. The accident occurred around 7 p.m. when their van collided with an unlit, fully loaded dump truck, causing grievous injuries to nearly every family member.
Spring Davis suffered multiple severe injuries, including two broken legs and a shattered shoulder, which required surgery in Mexico. Her parents, Rand and Mary Ruth Ziegler, were also critically injured and needed emergency surgeries in Belize before being transported back to Bucks County for extended rehabilitation. The couple’s four children and several extended family members sustained a variety of injuries, ranging from minor to severe.
Despite the immense physical and emotional toll, the Davis family remains steadfast in their faith and committed to their mission. They have spent six of the past eight years in Belize, primarily working to empower the country’s deaf community through a sign language program. They intend to resume this important work as soon as their medical conditions allow.
A GoFundMe account has been established to assist the family with the mounting medical expenses. The campaign has so far collected about $78,000 of its $100,000 goal. Nathanael Davis remains hopeful despite the circumstances, stating, “When we’re doing God’s work, it doesn’t mean bad stuff won’t happen. By the grace of God, we just try to take it and respond well to it.”
For those interested in contributing to the family’s recovery, the GoFundMe page is accepting donations.
