By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Guatemalan President-elect Bernardo Arevalo has proposed to current Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei to restart meetings for the transition process as of September 25.
According to Reuters, Arevalo had paused his participation in the transition process after offices from the main electoral tribunal were raided and sealed ballots were opened.
Following the raid, the Organization of American States (OAS) expressed concern saying they had violated Guatemalan electoral law.
Meanwhile, Arevalo said that the transition proceedings were threatened by the escalation of the “illegal political persecution from the prosecutor’s office.”
Arevalo said his transition team is confident that as tensions subside and legal actions are resolved, “progress can be made.”
