By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Friday, a top Mexican official confirmed that Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador plans to visit Washington D.C. in early November to meet with U.S. President Joe Biden to discuss concerns on immigration, development aid and drug trafficking.
According to the Associated Press, the announcement follows a surge in asylum applications being received in Mexico.
In addition, almost 60 train runs have been halted due to a large influx of migrants traversing Mexico en route to the U.S.
In Mexico, migrant centers are almost at capacity and the Mexican Government is “very worried” about the border closures and the migrant surge.
Almost 140,000 migrants are waiting to register for transit or asylum papers in Tapachula, Mexico.
