Taiwan’s U.N. bid gains traction as Belize and others voice support

Posted: Sunday, September 24, 2023. 8:22 am CST.

By Horace Palacio: The Republic of China (Taiwan) continues to receive increasing international support as three more of its diplomatic allies, namely St. Vincent and the Grenadines, St. Kitts and Nevis, and Belize, voiced their advocacy for Taiwan’s inclusion in the United Nations system. The statements were made during the 78th General Assembly’s General Debate held on Saturday.

With these three additions, 11 out of 13 of Taiwan’s diplomatic allies have now expressed their support for its participation in the U.N. during this year’s assembly.

Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves of St. Vincent and the Grenadines highlighted that Taiwan’s long-standing exclusion from the U.N. system since 1971 is outdated. He pressed that it is “long overdue” for the nation to be recognized and that Taiwan’s request to join relevant U.N. specialized agencies “is reasonable, and ought to be accommodated.”

Echoing this sentiment, Prime Minister Terrance Drew of St. Kitts and Nevis lauded Taiwan’s consistent contributions as a reliable development partner and emphasized the importance of representation for its 23 million people within multilateral institutions.

Belize’s Foreign Affairs Minister Eamon Courtenay also offered strong support, citing the need for Taiwan’s “full inclusion in the international system” due to its significant contributions as a democratic nation.

As the 78th General Assembly continues, the international community eagerly awaits the Holy See’s statement on Monday. Though an observer and not a U.N. member, the Holy See is Taiwan’s sole ally in Europe.

Meanwhile, Taiwan’s Caribbean ally, Haiti, under the leadership of Prime Minister Ariel Henry, chose to address the persistent unrest in the nation during its Friday presentation, without mentioning Taiwan.

As Taiwan’s push for global representation continues to gain momentum, the U.N. and its member states are confronted with the challenge of recognizing and accommodating Taiwan’s role in today’s interconnected world.
