By Aaron Humes: Sacred Heart College third-former Aydan Lizarraga defeated former Belize Open golf champion Steve Hack by a score of two under par to one under par to win the 2023 Belize Open, becoming the youngest champion in the tournament’s history.

15-year-old Lizarraga broke the all-time record at the Roaring River course near Belmopan, surpassing 19-year-old Rori Barrera in 2012. Second place Hack is 40 years Lizarraga’s senior.

Lizarraga led by five strokes entering day two of the tournament but Hack closed the gap to one by day’s end. However, Lizarraga held off Hack to win the trophy.

The tournament was sponsored by the Belize Tourism Board, Recinos Imports, Bravo Motors, Rude Boy, NEXGEN, Unicomer, Caribbean Sprinter and Santander Sugar Group and hosted by the Belize Golf Federation.
