Man charged for smoking weed in public says not guilty because he didn’t light up yet

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belize City man charged for allegedly smoking marijuana in public maintains his innocence because even though he was found with a joint in his hand, he had not lit it yet.

Alonzo Myers, who only just turned 18 two months ago, was spotted by police coming out of a store on the George Price Highway on September 22 with a joint in his hand. He was arrested and charged for smoking weed in public but in court today, he pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Myers, who was unrepresented in court, told the Magistrate that his joint was not lit when police found him so he was not guilty. The Magistrate informed him that no explanation was necessary due to his not guilty plea.

He was granted bail in the sum of $200 plus one surety of the same amount. He is due back in court on November 29.
