By Horace Palacio: In an initiative to bolster road safety awareness among the youth, the Ministry of Economic Development (MED), through its Second Road Safety Project, presented 400 Road Safety Toolkits to the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science, and Technology (MoECST). The handing-over ceremony saw Dr. Osmond Martinez, CEO for the MED; Mrs. Dian Maheia, CEO for the MoECST; and Mr. Zane Castillo, Project Manager for the Second Road Safety Project, in attendance.
These kits, worth BZ$70,960.00, are furnished with essential road safety materials. From traffic cones, safety vests, and whistles to laminated traffic and road line marking signs and ‘Stop and Go’ paddles, the kits are designed to offer comprehensive guidance. They also include flash drives loaded with safety videos and teaching aides, bolstered by pens, pencils, markers, exercise books, easels, and other pivotal school supplies for both teachers and students.
The overarching goal of this initiative is to facilitate teachers in seamlessly integrating these road safety materials into their pedagogical practices, emphasizing the paramount importance of road safety. Additionally, these resources will assist in establishing a safe zone for students, particularly in the vicinities of their educational institutions.
Expressing their gratitude, the MoECST applauded the Road Safety Project and MED’s relentless efforts in championing road safety awareness. Special praise was reserved for the project’s strategic focus on prioritizing schools positioned along Belize’s main thoroughfares and those located in urban and suburban regions, which historically have been susceptible to road traffic mishaps.
With the vision of minimizing and ultimately eliminating road-related tragedies, both the Ministry of Economic Development and the Second Road Safety Project ardently convey their message: “The life of one person lost is a life too many.” As we navigate the roads, it is incumbent upon all to recognize the significance of road safety. Let’s inculcate a culture of conscientiousness and responsibility during our commutes.
