By Breaking Belize News Staff: A sticky fingered shoplifter who picked up his fifth conviction for theft today, is lucky that a Magistrate only imposed a 3 month sentence instead of the mandatory one-year sentence the crime carries for repeat offenders.
Fifty-five-year-old Elias Reymundo Pech, appeared in court today facing a charge of theft for reportedly taking 10 air fresheners worth $2 each from Ice Cold Store in Burrell Boom. He was unrepresented in court and immediately pleaded guilty, saving the court time.
Unfortunately for him, this was his fifth conviction for theft so despite his plea to be let off with only a fine, he was sent to jail for three months, however, the Magistrate took into consideration his early guilty plea and decided not to impose the one-year sentence the offence normally carries.
Pech must also pay back $50 to the owner of the establishment by November 15 instead of the $20 the air fresheners would have cost him. So as they say, crime doesn’t pay.
