By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Independence Day, the Leader of the Opposition, Shyne Barrow indicated that in Belize, citizen security continues to worsen.
Barrow claimed that murders and violent crimes are soaring and gun licenses are being sold to the highest bidder.
However, the Commissioner of Police has since responded with statistics on his Facebook page.
And during an interview with News5 Live, Commissioner of Police Chester Williams said that it is wrong to politicize crime.
“When it comes to the issue of the crime rate he always tries to paint a picture that crime is out of control and he knows it is not true. He only does it for political reasons, which is wrong. It is not the duty of a politician to politicize the issue of crime and try to gain points from the misfortune of others. WE have our national statistics and when it comes to the murder count the stats don’t lie, you all have it and I don’t need to be the one to tell you,” Williams said.
The data showed that since 2012 up to 2023, for the same period of January to June, this year is the least-deadliest year with 41 murders.
The year 2020 showed 50 murders, 2021 had 51 murders and 2022 had 54 murders for the same period.
“When we compared the first half of this year, 2023 to those three years, 2013, 2020, and 2022 we are down compared to those three years. So for the leader of the opposition to say murders are occurring more frequent than before, he is lying,” Williams reiterated.
