El Salvador’s Minister of Agriculture tours Valley of Peace Community

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise, Jose Mai is hosting El Salvador’s Minister of Agriculture and Livestock Lic. Oscar Enrique Guardado Calderon and the Director of Agriculture of El Salvador, the Director of Research and Development, the Director of Policy, the Director for Agricultural Education and the Ambassador of El Salvador to Belize, Graciela Marina Perez Zeledon for a 2-day visit that commenced on September 25, 2023.

During day 1 of the tour, the delegation toured several farms and met with farmers in the Cayo District.

The day finalized with a visit to Valley of Peace Community.

The Valley of Peace Community was established to provide refuge to immigrants who were fleeing from the Salvadoran Civil War.

The community has a strong focus on agriculture, particularly the cultivation of cabbage. Vegetable production plays a vital role in both sustaining the community and contributing to the local economy.

An overview of the community and the structure of its Cooperative was presented to the delegation.

The Cooperative structure involves members working together, sharing resources, and collectively managing their agricultural activities. This has led the community to increase productivity and economic stability for the community members.

Communities like the Valley of Peace often place importance on sustainable agriculture and environmental practices.
