By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Belize is being represented at the Pan-American Health Organization (PAHO) proposed program budget for the period of 2024-2025.
Minister of Health and Wellness, Kevin Bernard reiterated the need for health systems resilience in Belize.
“Firstly, the pillar on Health Systems Resilience is of particular importance to Belize. Our country has been heavily impacted by the global health crisis, highlighting the need for resilient health systems that can withstand future pandemics and health emergencies. We recommend that the budget allocation for this pillar be prioritized to strengthen our health infrastructure, build human resource capacity, and improve access to health services,” Bernard said.
Bernard also indicated that Belize stand firmly behind the pillar on Health Promotion and Social Determinants
“The third pillar, Addressing Health Inequities, speaks directly to our ongoing national efforts. Belize is a diverse society, and we must ensure that everyone, regardless of their socio-economic status, race, or geography, has equitable access to quality health care. We believe that the proposed budget will be instrumental in achieving this,” he added,
The Minister also mentioned Disease Elimination and Epidemic Control saying that Belize supports investment in surveillance systems, research, and the development of strategies to control epidemics and eliminate diseases.
In addition, Bernard highlighted the importance of the Climate Change and Health pillar.
“We advocate for further research, mitigation strategies, and the integration of climate change considerations into all health planning,” he stated.
