By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Sarteneja fisherman who was busted with an illegal haul of 15 conch outside of conch season was fined thousands of dollars in court today.
Jose Luis Eguizabal, 31, appeared unrepresented in court today and was read two charges, one count of possession of conch during the closed season and a count of obstruction.
According to reports, on September 19 after 7:00 p.m., Eguizabal was along the seawall behind the High Court in Belize City and was in possession of 15 fillet conch during the closed season. Fisheries officers also reported that when they approached Eguizabal, he threw the conch into the river.
For possession of conch outside of the season, he was fined $1,000 plus $5 cost of court and was given until November 30 to pay, in default 5 months in jail. For each conch found in his possession he was fined $50, totalling $750 plus $5 cost of court to be paid by November 30. For obstruction, he was fined $2,000 plus $5 cost of court to be paid by December 31, in default, one year in prison.
