By Aaron Humes: Activist Nigel Petillo has announced via social media that he will run for a seat on the Belmopan City Council in the 2024 municipal elections.
On his official page accompanied by a campaign poster, he wrote, “Let’s Try Something Different.”
Petillo was endorsed by fellow activist Audrey Matura, who suggested he should be Mayor and asked Belmopan residents to “think outside the box” and strike away from the two-party system.
Notably, Petillo did not indicate which position he was seeking, or whether he is running independently or for a political party.
Petillo came to fame as head of the Belize Grassroots Youth Empowerment Association, spearheading the fight to create the agricultural and residential enclave on the George Price Highway that became Harmonyville. After a bitter separation with BGYEA’s members, he moved on to other projects, reclaiming land around the country for similar communities.
