By Breaking Belize News Staff: Sources to Breaking Belize News have confirmed that several Belizeans traveling on a bus to Mexico this morning were hassled by Mexican authorities.
The bus was reportedly stopped at 4 am near Tulum and demanded to see passports and stamps from mostly Belizeans.
Several of them on the bus were reportedly asked multiple times for their passports.
Notably, the area where the checkpoint was set up had no reception and was completely dark.
Many Belizeans including transmigrantes have now opted to travel via bus to Mexico and board flights to the United States because by booking and flying through Mexico, tickets are far cheaper.
Earlier this year, several Belizean transmigrantes were robbed at gunpoint in Mexico. At that time, the culprits took their passports, cell phones and cash.
Some Belizean transmigrantes told us that they are often victims of extortion by Mexican law enforcement authorities, who demand money and items they are bringing to Belize.
