By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise is hosting a training for backyard poultry producers to strengthen capacity in an effort to keep Belize free from Avian Influenza.
The training is being held at the Yo Creek Agric Station.
The training involves sessions by Armando Cowo of the Belize Poultry Association, Dr. Jose Myers and Dr. Jorge Lopez from the Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA).
Backyard poultry farmers from Orange Walk are participating in the session.
Avian Influenza has been detected in a few countries in Central America but has so far not been detected in Belize.
It is a disease that has mortal consequences for bird populations when it is present.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise through BAHA and in collaboration with OIRSA, the Regional International Organization for Plant and Animal Health, and the Belize Forestry Department has been conducting public awareness campaigns and public sensitization in an effort to keep Belize free from Avian Influenza both in domestic and wild birds.
