Minister of Public Utilities and Logistics says Belize to soon experience electric bus runs

Posted: Saturday, September 30, 2023. 8:53 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Minister of Public Utilities and Logistics, Michel Chebat has confirmed that there are ongoing discussions on introducing electric buses to Belize.

According to Chebat, the Electric Vehicle Mobility Project is being sponsored by the European Union.

The project is being managed by the United Nations Development Project.

“And it is an important project because what it seeks to do is to introduce electric busses for the first time into our country. We have two pilot projects we’re going to be doing. One is going to be for Belize City for the intercity runs, and the next one is going to be an intra-district run that will run,” Chebat said.

Chebat said that the project is important, especially in terms of the reduction of carbon emissions.

“So this is an important project, and we’re hoping that as time goes by, people are going to see the benefit of using electric vehicles and perhaps lessen our dependency on fossil fuels,” Chebat added.
