By Horace Palacio: As reported by Reuters, a tragic incident occurred during a Sunday mass in a church located in northern Mexico when its roof collapsed. The mishap has claimed the lives of at least five individuals, including a child, and has left several others injured. Rescuers are actively sifting through the debris in hopes of locating additional survivors.
Social media platforms were flooded with footage depicting the horrifying moment when the church’s roof gave way. The video showcases plumes of gray smoke rising immediately after the collapse, soon followed by the crumbling of the church’s yellow brick exterior walls.
The civil protection agency of the Tamaulipas state, neighboring Texas, released images showcasing the severely damaged church in Ciudad Madero and confirmed their active participation in the ongoing rescue efforts. Further details from Mexico’s Reforma newspaper indicated that among the deceased was a child, a statement corroborated by Adrian Oseguera, the mayor of Ciudad Madero. This city lies on the Gulf coast in proximity to the port of Tampico.
Bishop Jose Armando Alvarez of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Tampico expressed his sorrow at the disaster. He mentioned that the roof’s collapse occurred as the congregation was partaking in communion and urged everyone to keep the survivors in their prayers.
In a heartfelt message circulated on social platforms, Bishop Armando conveyed, “In this moment, the necessary work is being carried out to pull out the people who are still under the rubble.”
