Andre Perez refunds Treasury his salary after ‘oversight’ as legal review continues

By Aaron Humes: Minister of the Blue Economy and Civil Aviation Andre Perez has had to refund the Government of Belize some $3,235 – his monthly salary up to September 15.

Perez has remained on leave of absence since August 21, shortly after news broke of an alleged inappropriate relationship and possible blackmail allegations involving an attorney who has since left the country.

According to Cabinet Secretary Stuart Leslie, the matter was an “oversight” on his part which has been corrected; it means Perez’s leave is without official pay.

A few weeks ago, Attorney General Anthony Sylvestre said a “legal review” of the situation initiated by his office continues and will be completed in “a reasonably timely manner,” likely within the next month or so. He was careful to distinguish this probe from a police investigation since the Police Department has yet to receive a formal criminal complaint from the accuser, while Perez has made such a complaint alleging blackmail and other issues.

Sylvestre said the report would be made to Prime Minister John Briceño.
