By Breaking Belize News Staff: A tense situation over land unfolded in Yemeri Grove village in the Toledo District on Sunday, with the police and the Commissioner of Indigenous Affairs having to calm the situation.
According to our colleagues at PGTV, the Yemeri Chairman issued approximately 50 lots to villagers which has angered residents of neighbouring Laguna Village, which is a primarily Maya village. The Yemeri Village Council has complained that Maya residents from Laguna encroach on their land claiming communal Maya land rights.
That led to a tense escalation in Yemeri yesterday with residents even resorting to pulling machetes. Police had to be called in to keep control of the situation.
Harold Usher, Yemeri Grove Chairman, told the media that residents of Laguna Village have erected two building in the area and says they cannot just sit by and let the encroachment happen.
