Archeological Institute invites sky watchers for October 14 solar eclipse

Posted: Tuesday, October 3, 2023. 11:01 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: The Institute of Archaeology is inviting sky watchers to enjoy the upcoming annular solar eclipse at various Maya plazas in Belize.

The eclipse can be seen on October 14 from Lamanai in Orange Walk, Cerro Maya in Corozal and Altun Ha along the Old Northern Highway.

A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun, thereby totally or partly obscuring the image of the Sun for a viewer on Earth.

An annular solar eclipse occurs when the Moon’s apparent diameter is smaller than the Sun’s, blocking most of the Sun’s light and causing the Sun to look like an annulus (ring).

The eclipse will be seen across the Americas, from the western United States, Canada and Mexico to Central and South America. The time of visibility will be around 9:30 in the morning and the sites will be open at 8 a.m.
