By Aaron Humes: Police say a Belize City man may have been caught in the act of planning to burglarize a school on Sunday.
32-year-old Stanwell Bernardez of Antelope Street Extension appeared before Chief Magistrate Jayani Wegodapola on a charge of going equipped for stealing contrary to Section 173 of the Criminal Code which states, “A person shall be guilty of an offense if, when not at his place of abode, he has with him any article for use in the course of or in connection with any burglary, theft or cheat.”
Police allege that Bernardez was found inside the Fabers Road and Central American Boulevard compound of the Muslim Community Primary School on October 1, carrying a large pair of pliers and a small screwdriver.
Bernardez pleaded not guilty but owes the court $4,275 in fines for previous convictions. Despite the objection to bail for someone alleged to be a “well-known offender,” Bernardez was able to obtain bail of $1,000 and surety with a promise that he would be able to pay his fines by December 4, 2023. However, he has not been able to meet bail and is on remand until that date.
