By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Data from the U.S. Border Patrol indicate that migrant deaths in El Paso, Texas doubled in the 2023 fiscal year.
According to El Paso Times, the death toll is the heaviest toll the region has seen with more than 100 deaths between May and September, the same time when El Paso experienced one of its hottest summers on record with 44 consecutive days of triple-digit heat.
Law enforcement agencies and first responders were called as people died within reach of rescue.
Agencies responded many times to attempted rescues and body recoveries.
The Rio Grande and the canals also claimed half a dozen lives this year, according to an unofficial count by the El Paso Water Improvement District No. 1.
