Item found on Maya Island air flight bomb or fireworks?

Posted: Tuesday, October 3, 2023. 2:27 pm CST.

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Last week, the Belize Defense Force’s (BDF) Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit determined that an object found onboard a Maya Island Air flight from San Pedro was an improvised explosive device (IED).

The BDF was called after the discovery of the item and their report indicated that the IED was black and had a cardboard cover and had high explosive filling.

In addition, the report indicated that the initiator was then ignited to verify if it was a live one.

During an interview with News 5 Belize, Director of Civil Aviation, Nigel Carter said that after authorities removed the device from the aircraft, evidence showed that the device was not an improvised explosive device, but more a pyrotechnic flare that was probably used for one of the events that occurred on or about during the September Celebrations.
