Minister of Health emphasizes prevention efforts for non-communicable diseases especially with surge in dengue cases

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Last week, Minister of Health and Wellness, Kevin Bernard represented Belize at the United Nations General Assembly.

Among the major focus areas, is the prevention of and reduction of non-communicable diseases.

Recently, there has been a rise in cases of dengue and the Ministry is raising awareness on the prevention of non-communicable diseases.

“NCDs, cancer, diabetes, hypertension, we need to ensure that we can keep those numbers down. We have dengue right now on the rise in the region. Jamaica has declared an outbreak of dengue…. We have a steady rise that we are seeing right now in dengue in Belize. So, we are ensuring that we beef up our prevention methods and educate our people as well,” Bernard said.

In addition, the Minister said that the Ministry must ensure that there is access to improved infrastructure across hospitals in Belize.
