Businesses awarded for excellence at Expo Belize, but attendance continues on a downward trend

By Aaron Humes: Top participants in the 2023 Expo Belize Marketplace held in mid-September were awarded on Tuesday by the Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI), along with other participation and recognition to stakeholders.

The Best Overall Booth was awarded to the CK Girls, while the Best Micro Enterprise Booth went to Ashlee’s Baked Creations and Belize Electricity Limited won the People’s Choice Award for favorite booth.

Winner of the Best Entrepreneur category, Abigail Bood, who won for her jewelry-making business called “Hey Abbz” has been active for close to two years, making hand-made gold jewelry with gems and pearls and noted that part of their performance was about catching the eye of visitors with their location.

Chamber Public Relations Manager Kory Leslie related, “This ceremony was an opportunity for us to acknowledge some of the exemplary participants at the expo as well as giveaway our bigger gate prize raffle awards that were sponsored for the events. Basically what I’ve been saying throughout the ceremony is that this is a way to bring things back to the businesses because in the planning stage, it’s all about the businesses and then in the middle, it becomes more about the visitors who come to the expo giving them a good experience and ensuring that they are safe and having a good time so the ceremony is a way to not only close off everything but also a way to bring it back to those who showed the event support from start to finish.”

About 11 thousand visitors attended the Marion Jones Sporting Complex, continuing a recent decline in attendance from a high of 19 thousand in 2013 per the Chamber.

Next year’s event retains its usual mid-September date of September 13 and 14.
