INTERNATIONAL NEWS: US House Speaker ousted in historic vote

By Breaking Belize News Staff: In a historic and unprecedented move, Republican Kevin McCarthy was removed from his position as Speaker of the House of Representatives in a 216-210 vote.

The move follows much division within McCarthy’s own Republican party over spending cuts as lawmakers try to avoid a looming Government shutdown.

McCarthy’s removal came after Republican Representative, Matt Gaetz acted to force a vote on a motion to vacate the office of the speaker. Other speakers of the House have stepped down before in the past after losing their party’s support but McCarthy is the first and only speaker to be removed through a vote of the full House in the middle of a congressional term.

Following his removal, Patrick McHenry of North Carolina has been appointed pro-tempore Speaker until a new speaker is elected.

Until a House speaker is installed, it is unlikely that further action will be taken on bills to fund the government, with lawmakers facing a Nov. 17 deadline to provide more money or face a partial government shutdown.

Republican lawmakers said they would need at least a week to choose a new speaker, which will eat into the time necessary to pass that needed legislation.
