By Aaron Humes: Racecourse Street resident Denroy Lopez, 41, pleaded guilty to escaping from lawful custody in 2022 in the Magistrate’s Court.
Back in June of 2022, Lopez was charged with rape and escape from lawful custody. He had been detained by police on June 16 on a charge of breach of protection order but managed to squeeze through a small window at the Queen Street Police Station cell block and flee; he was picked up a short time later.
Lopez avoided jail time as he is a first-time offender but was fined $850 and cost of court due by December 31, in default six months imprisonment.
Lopez awaits a preliminary inquiry on the rape charge as it is an indictable offense and if sufficient evidence exists, the case would be tried at the High Court.
