International News: Guatemalans engage in Day 6 of National Strike demanding resignations of prosecutors

Posted: Sunday, October 8, 2023. 9:35 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, thousands of Guatemalans across the country have gathered in the streets for the 6th consecutive day demanding the immediate resignation of powerful senior prosecutors accused of undermining democracy in Guatemala.

Following the August Presidential elections, the Attorney General’s ministry conducted several raids at the Supreme Electoral Tribunal where the ballots are kept.

During the raid, sealed ballots were opened and in the latest raid, the ballots were taken away.

Popular stores, restaurants, markets, and gas stations around the country remain closed in an overwhelming show of support to President-elect Bernardo Arevalo and due process for the transition.

In addition, residents are denouncing the blatant moves by senior officials to undermine their country’s democracy.

President-elect Arevalo issued a recorded statement thanking Guatemalans for peacefully demonstrating to let their voices be heard.

“Six days that have reflected the strength, will, and dignity of thousands of brave people that have come out peacefully to raise their voices using slogans. The tyrants have refused to listen to your voice at the polls. We recognize your braveness to defend our democracy,” Arevalo said.

The President-elect also thanked the indigenous community for their immense support.

The international community including the Organization of American States (OAS) has expressed concern about ongoing efforts to undermine democracy in Guatemala.
