Police versus Police in Orange Walk after traffic accident

Posted: Wednesday, October 11, 2023. 4:04 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: A police officer in Orange Walk Town is facing criminal charges after a traffic accident but is also contemplating his own legal action.

Constable Pedro Novelo apparently collided with his Ford pick-up truck into a Chevrolet Captiva driven by one Ever Perez in front of the Courts Store along Queen Victoria Avenue in downtown Orange Walk a week ago in an incident caught on video. He appears to be dazed or possibly intoxicated as he stumbles right into the arms of waiting fellow police and traffic officers.

Then, as he is being detained, it appears a fellow officer has officer Novelo in a chokehold and throws him to the ground. According to internal investigations, as revealed by Officer Commanding Eastern Division, ACP Hilberto Romero, he, Novelo, appeared to be trying to flee: “The information we gather is that after the accident, Pedro Novelo fled from the scene. He was then pursued by some traffic officers who followed him through Orange Walk and eventually, they ended up in that area where he was detained. He was then taken into custody where a urine sample was obtained. A NIP [notice of intended prosecution] was served on him and we are presently putting the file together and we will be levying charges…”

Romero added that the “takedown” of P.C. Novelo and his actions will be investigated and charges, both internal and possibly criminal, will be determined. Reports say Novelo has conceded being in the wrong in the accident, but will take action against the accused officer for his alleged mistreatment.
