By Horace Palacio: An unforeseen gasoline crisis has emerged in Melchor, Guatemala, causing concern among locals who never envisioned such a scenario. Lengthy lines of both vehicles and motorbikes have materialized at the town’s Shell gasoline station, with residents in a rush to secure fuel amidst the diminishing supplies.
Saul Lopez, a resident of Melchor, shared his astonishment on social media, saying, “Algo que nunca creí ver en mi querido Melchor, se termino la gasolina,” which in English means, “I never imagined this day in dear Melchor, where the gasoline is all gone.” His post, enriched with photos illustrating the frenzied situation at the station, has captured significant attention online, emphasizing the critical nature of the event.
Photographs reveal town members, a notable number on motorbikes, in queues, banking on obtaining gasoline before it’s entirely depleted. The atmosphere is filled with discussions about the impending challenges of commuting the next day and speculating on the roots of this sudden shortage.
Ongoing protests in Guatemala City might be a contributing factor to this unexpected shortage, as they can disrupt supply chains and block transportation routes. Furthermore, it’s known that many Belizeans from nearby towns such as Benque, Succotz, and San Ignacio frequently travel to Melchor to fill their tanks, adding to the demand for the town’s fuel resources.
