Patrick Faber denies ‘crossing the floor’ by separating from Shyne; PUPs unfazed

Posted: Friday, October 13, 2023. 8:27 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: Collet area representative Patrick Faber has told Channel 5 News that the position he took in relation to a communication between Speaker of the House of Representatives Valerie Woods and Leader of the Opposition Moses “Shyne” Barrow in August for which Barrow is being encouraged to apologize is his own and not necessarily that of the wider United Democratic Party.

According to Faber, the United Democratic Party did not take a collective position on the matter involving Barrow’s comments, despite his personal opinion that the request was not handled fairly by the House Speaker. Barrow has said he will not apologize, that he stands by what he said, and that the majority of the party agrees with him and not Faber.

As Faber was not present for the meeting and did not send an alternate in his place, he did not actually vote on the decision of the House Constitution and Foreign Affairs Committee led by Dr Louis Zabaneh, who chaired in place of incumbent Julius Espat.

In separate comments, Prime Minister John Briceno, Deputy Cordel Hyde, and Espat showed no interest in taking sides in the affair. Espat said that upon receiving the letter, his only thought was, “Democracy is functioning.” As for the issue of crossing the floor, he said the matter may well wind up in court but there is a simple way to resolve it for Barrow: apologize, and mean it, as he himself has done on a few occasions – though he quipped that “they never accept my apologies.” He added that Shyne most likely will not apologize “because he’s not a leader.”

Hyde, no stranger to internal party intrigues, says he pays little attention to the UDP’s wrangles: “I don’t care much enough. I don’t pay enough attention to these guys and I really don’t like I’m just really, really, really busy from afar. It seems like comedy; seems entertaining. It seems downright insane many times, you know, and this latest flare-up seems like it falls into that category. Kind of insane like, you know, I mean, I don’t know. I mean, I try to stay away from these people’s politics.”

Likewise for the P.M., who pointed out that there was no vote in the House on the matter and that Faber’s comments are commendable: “The Leader of the Opposition is wrong. The Leader of the Opposition was wrong in being disrespectful. I am sure that he would not like it if somebody were to use that kind of language describing his mother. He would not like that. The Speaker of the House is a mother. The Speaker of the House is somebody that we should all respect. The Speaker of the House is responsible for the affairs of the National Assembly. He needs to look at how the UDP speaker used to treat us when [they] were in government, when we were in opposition. He needs to see how is it that Julius Espat was dragged out of the house and that is because he did not insult the Speaker of the House. And now he wants to say that Patrick Faber crossed the line. Anyway, I don’t waste my time in discussing the Leader of the Opposition.”
