‘Shyne’ Barrow denies paying Friday protestors; says he does not condone aggressive actions against Police

Posted: Sunday, October 15, 2023. 9:45 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: By the judgment of Leader of the Opposition Moses “Shyne” Barrow and party chairman Michael Peyrefitte, Friday’s protest at the National Assembly was “robust” and “satisfying” in its turnout, and clear in its message against the Government.

But after Barrow was seen talking at the foot of the Assembly following the end of the protest after 2 p.m. while the House was suspended, watching media wondered if we were seeing an exchange of funds – a reward to party supporters for their participation.

Challenged on this in the interview we held afterward, Barrow resorted to a legal threat, telling Channel 5 News reporter Paul Lopez, “No, absolutely not, Paul. Don’t make such scandalous accusations. Don’t do that. That’s defamatory,” and adding “Absolutely not” when pressed. He further explained that “People were fed, people were given beverages, and people were provided transportation. I guarantee you of that.”

Protestors were seen pushing the barriers installed by Police during an earlier statement by Barrow at the height of the protest, but he insisted he did not condone their actions: “I came out and I said my greetings to people, and people were exercising their frustrations, and I tried to signal to them to hold it down. But protesters are right to protest. I can’t tell them how to express their frustrations. I would hope that they could do it in a peaceful manner. That is what I advocate. You never saw me condoning that exercise of their frustration. [All I said was] that they are frustrated, and I listed the reasons why they are frustrated. But I did not condone or encourage any such behavior.”

There were no reports of arrests being made and it appears the Police will have to rethink their strategies for such events. Commissioner of Police Chester Williams is presently out of the country and so has not responded to what his men saw on Friday.
