Taiwan gives $1.5 million for National Assembly renovation

By Aaron Humes: A half-century on from its inauguration on October 9, 1970, the National Assembly Building in Belmopan will be getting a major facelift with support from the Government of the Republic of China (Taiwan).

Speaker of the House of Representatives Valerie Woods informed during her start-of-meeting notices at Friday’s session that “I am pleased to announce that we received the news that the grant request has been approved for BZ$1,584,250. This would be the first major renovation, and which I’m sure members, the visiting public, the media, and invited guests will attest is much needed. There will be an official ceremony for the record of donation on November 7 and further details on [the] extent of works, implementation, timeline, and all other attendant issues will be had at that time in full gratitude and recognition of this grant.”

Additionally, Speaker Woods promised that a follow-up to the first annual report on the work of the House of Representatives issued last year would be complete by the end of November after a regrettable delay: “[It] therefore will be an annual report with a mid-year review so that it is brought up to date. I felt it necessary to appraise you of the status of the report since an annual report, while not a requirement of the office of the Speaker, is considered a best practice in the principles of open parliament; therefore, it is incumbent upon me to ensure that the initiative started continues and hopefully remains a practice for future parliaments.”

Finally, the National Assembly will host the third annual Children’s Parliament on November 10, and parliamentarians will be asked to support the chosen Youth Parliamentarians during their preparation for debate.
