Father is accused of abandoning child at neighbor’s home

By Aaron Humes: A Belize City man is accused of abandoning his two-year-old son during the night while going in search of his mother, his common-law partner.

Michael Cowo, who was arrested and charged in early August, has been provided with disclosure but is still yet to know whether his case will be dealt with summarily or on indictment. He returns to court on January 5, 2024, and is out on bail of $3,000.

On the night of July 30, Cowo is accused of abandoning the child he was charged by law to maintain. His grandmother reported him missing, saying she had gone to see her son but was informed by his common-law wife that they were looking for her grandson.

The youngster was found at a neighbor’s home, who said that just after 3:30 a.m. she heard the little boy crying and took him in. The boy was handed over to his grandmother and Social Services was called in.

The child’s mother told police that she had left her house sometime after midnight on July 30 and that her son was sleeping with his father. When she returned at about 4 a.m., only he was there. He claimed he had gone looking for her and left the child sleeping, but when he came back home, the youngster was nowhere to be seen.
