Fishers told to stop placing gear near Barrier Reef

Posted: Friday, October 20, 2023. 2:35 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Effective November 16, the Fisheries Department has announced that it will be enforcing regulations prohibiting the placement of fishing gear within 300 yards of the Barrier Reef or any other patch reef.

This is in accordance with Statutory Instrument No. 106 of 2022 and the Department is authorized to remove traps, shades, and other gear beginning immediately and before November 16.

Failure to comply will result in the enforcement of the regulation. The Fisheries Department hereby makes a special appeal to fishers to uphold the Fisheries Regulations and urges all citizens to report any violations to the department by calling telephone number 224-4552 or emailing [email protected].
