President of Belize Cancer Society says cancer now more prevalent in younger women

Posted: Friday, October 20, 2023. 9:58 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The month of October is recognized globally as breast cancer awareness month.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women worldwide.

President of the Belize Cancer Society, Laura Tucker Longsworth noted that cancer has become more prevalent among younger women.

“It’s not only a trend locally, it is globally and regional because remember we’re connected to the Caribbean so we speak to Latin America and the Caribbean most of the time but we mimic those, that is a phenomenon, it’s impactful for us in Belize because we need guidelines that will really move our women to test earlier. For instance, breast cancer was a thing for people in their 50s and now our women in their 30s, early 30s are dying of breast cancer,” Longsworth said.

Longsworth said with the HPV vaccines available in country, there should be no reason a 25 or a 28 year old woman should be dying of cervical cancer.

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the Caribbean.

The World Health Organization (WHO) continues to urge World leaders, cervical cancer survivors, advocates, partners, and civil society to reaffirm their commitment to eliminating cervical cancer through action.

In 2020, 194 countries resolved to eliminate a cancer for the first time and WHO launched the Global strategy to eliminate cervical cancer as a public health problem.

As communities rally to organize local activities, illuminate the cause by lighting monuments in the colour teal, and organize advocacy events on November 17, 2023.
